Small Group Leader Guide

Large gatherings can create a moment. Small groups make room for students to be known, ask questions, and put faith into practice together.

01

Create a safe community

Students open up when leaders protect their dignity and make the room feel welcoming. Safety is built through consistent, ordinary choices.

  • Learn names, stories, interests, and prayer requests.
  • Never embarrass a student publicly.
  • Invite quieter students to contribute without pressure.
02

Pay attention to the group

Groups develop over time. Notice energy, body language, participation, conflict, and the questions students are really asking.

  • Build comfort during the orientation stage.
  • Encourage connection as students begin opening up.
  • Protect unity when personalities or conflict emerge.
03

Guide, do not re-preach

Prepare before the conversation, listen carefully, use follow-up questions, and allow silence to do some work. Offer biblical clarity when needed, but leave room for students to participate.

  • Ask open questions and listen for what is underneath the first answer.
  • Redirect dominant or distracting voices with patience.
  • Follow up when a student shares something meaningful.
MAKE IT YOUR OWN

Use this as a starting point, then shape it around the students and leaders God has entrusted to you.
