Student Ministry Leader Standards

Every church should customize these standards with its own safeguarding policies and local reporting requirements. The goal is simple: protect students, protect leaders, and build trust.

01

Choose visible, accountable spaces

Ministry relationships should be warm and appropriate, never isolated or unclear. Meet in visible settings and follow your church's two-adult and transportation policies.

  • Avoid being alone with a student in private spaces or vehicles.
  • Respect physical and emotional boundaries.
  • Bring another approved adult into any situation that needs support.
02

Communicate with wisdom

Students notice the example leaders set online and in private conversations. Keep communication transparent, age-appropriate, and connected to your church's established channels.

  • Avoid private social-media messaging whenever possible.
  • Use parent-aware or group communication practices.
  • Never promise secrecy when safety is involved.
03

Respond, show up, and lead with integrity

Report safety concerns immediately through the appropriate church and civil channels. Then keep serving with consistency, humility, and a focus on the students in front of you.

  • Report abuse, self-harm, suicidal thoughts, or threats without delay.
  • Communicate early when you cannot attend.
  • Model the same integrity in private that you teach in public.
MAKE IT YOUR OWN

Use this as a starting point, then shape it around the students and leaders God has entrusted to you.
